Some Thoughts on Marriage and AI

So, today I want to talk about marriage.

I have a few thoughts on marriage myself. I got married at twenty-eight, and I've now been married for almost fourteen years.

And in our AI hardware, I've turned some of those thoughts about marriage into AI agents.

They're intended for two people getting to know each other with marriage in mind, as well as couples who are already married. The idea is to have AI support them as they talk and communicate, helping users improve their quality of life, or, you could say, have a happier marriage. That also includes helping people understand how compatible they are when they're getting to know each other.

Why did we think of doing this?

Perhaps these days, many people still feel nervous when marriage comes up, or even feel resistant to it. So we made a tool like this.

I think marriage may be the most important investment of your life.

If we borrow the idea of investment from business, I think it may be more important than starting a company, or a particular venture at some point in your life.

Because you can start a business many times. Some people start ten or more businesses, right? You can switch projects, change direction, or even change partners.

Of course, you could also say that you can get divorced and marry again. But it certainly isn't something you can keep trying over and over in the same way you might start businesses or switch projects.

So I think the choice of whom to marry, and how well the two of you fit together, may matter more than some of the choices you make in business.

I once heard an idea that I thought was really good.

It goes like this: each person's journey of growing up is like a jigsaw puzzle, and marriage is the final piece.

Before marriage, the family you grew up in, your parents, friends, work, love, housing and financial circumstances are each a piece of that puzzle.

Then, as two people get to know each other, they fall in love and get married.

Maybe you've been married for five years, and life has carried on that way. But then one day, as you spend time together, you realize that this piece of the puzzle, marriage, doesn't fit quite as well as you thought.

And that piece in the middle keeps squeezing the space available to the other pieces.

Your friendships, love, daily life, parents, work and financial situation, for example.

It pushes against those other pieces until they feel very uncomfortable.

And at that point, you may feel very uncomfortable yourself.

So when we were building AI agents, we wondered: could we put something like this into an AI voice recorder?

Through conversations that both people are willing to have recorded, whether they're getting to know each other before marriage or are already married, could we look at how they communicate about things like money and everyday life?

And then help them make adjustments, so that this puzzle piece fits a little better and these relationships can be handled a little better.

The idea behind it isn't actually that complicated.

It's about helping each user really come back to themselves and look at their own situation.

I can briefly share some of what we've put into this agent.

For example, an analysis of values.

When two people are getting to know each other with marriage in mind, we pay attention to differences in their values.

And for conversations between spouses or partners, we also use large language models to do some analysis and scoring, to give people a reference point.

To see how we might help both people have more room in their lives.

That means room for your friendships, room for your work, and room for family, finances and your relationships with your parents.

We've taken all of these areas into account in the design.

Those are some of our current thoughts and design ideas for AI agents in the marriage-related part of what we're building.

Of course, I'd also love to hear your suggestions.

What else could we add to these agents? Or, if you know more about this area, perhaps we could work together to make the agent better.

I hope that, in the end, through conversation and AI, it can genuinely help people improve their quality of life and have happier marriages.

I think that's really where we're coming from in doing this.
